German gambling market grows by 300 million euros

Berlin, May 8, 2018 — The German gambling market is continuing to grow. In 2017, the German gambling market (lotteries, bets, gambling machines and machines ) created a gross gaming revenue of 13.5 billion euros that’s an increase of 300 million euros in comparison with 2016. This equates to further earnings of 1 billion euros compared with 2015. The majority of the gambling segments gained from the overall positive economic growth in Germany, but this varied from department.
These findings are part of this new report German Betting Market Monitor 2018 released by Goldmedia Strategy Consulting.
Record growth from the betting segment, however, lotteries are under pressure
In 2017, betting notched up the most powerful level of expansion of all of the gaming segments using a 17 percent plus in gross gaming revenue (wagers minus payouts) in comparison with 2016. In comparison with 2015, the marketplace has increased by 33 percent in total. This positive trend is expected to continue. The forthcoming 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia will stimulate extra revenue growth for the 90+ sports gambling operators that are active in the German market. What’s more, the dysfunctional regulatory policies which are still in effect in Germany are continuing to supply favourable operating conditions which are supporting further growth.
On the other hand, the German lottery segment stays static and gross gambling revenue has fallen by 3 percent, primarily due to declining ticket sales from the highest grossing 6aus49 lottery sport. Additionally, the state-owned lotteries are having competitive competition from online lotteries operating from Malta with no German licence.
Changes in the gambling machines segment Gaming machines achieved yet another very lucrative year, creating a gross gaming revenue of over 7 billion euros in 2017. However, significant structural changes in the marketplace are impending after the introduction of new regulations. Stricter rules regulating the entire number of gambling halls as well as the minimum distance allowed between them may lead to a considerable decline in the number of gaming venues in the medium term. Though the gaming machine operators have initiated more than 1,000 legal event to stall the implementation of those policies, the strong market growth that has been seen in recent years has come to a halt.
