A couple of exciting welterweight bouts were shown for upcoming March fight cards, and I’ll give my first thoughts on these new matchups in the current MMA odds and ends.
Curtis Millender vs. Elizeu Zaleski dos Santos Surging welterweights Curtis Millender and Elizeu Zaleski dos Santos will meet at UFC Fight Night 146, which takes place March 9 in Intrust Bank Arena in Wichita, Kansas. The news was revealed by globo . This is an important welterweight fight between two fighters on hot streaks which should bump the victor into the top-10 in the world at 170lbs.
Millender (17-3) is an ideal 3-0 so much in the UFC, and then he went 4-0 overall in 2018 including his period in LFA. He started his UFC debut with a bang when he knocked out Thiago Alves, then followed it up with decision wins over Max Griffin and Siyar Bahadurzada. In general, Millender has won eight consecutive fights and many think he has the potential be a potential winner due to his dimension for the welterweight divison and his elite striking technique. Dos Santos (20-5) has gone 6-1 at the UFC and has not lost within the Octagon since a split decision defeat Nicholas Dalby in his introduction. His last two conflicts were amazing as he showed his amazing knockout power with brutal wins over Sean Strickland and Luigi Vendramini. He’s already broken to the top-15 positions and could jump to the top-10 if he beats Millender. This is a very good, competitive battle on paper I could see either guy taking. I frankly think it’s about as close to as much of a struggle as you can get, and I’m expecting a Pick’em line in the sportsbooks.
Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson vs. Anthony Pettis, UFC Fight Night Nashville
Former UFC lightweight winner Anthony Pettis has decided to make the move up to welterweight, and he will make his debut in his new weight class against leading contender Stephen”Wonderboy” Thompson in what is an intriguing conflict between elite strikers. The set will match in a UFC Fight Night card that has not been declared yet on March 23 at Nashville, Tennessee, according to a report by ESPN’s Ariel Helwani. The scribe reports which the bout has been agreed to, and the UFC should officially announce it . Thompson (14-3-1) is 9-3-1 at the UFC and in his last outing lost an extremely controversial choice to Darren Till. He is only 1-2-1 in his last four fights, but it’s difficult to say he is on a decline when two of these non-victories came from UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley, and his win over Jorge Masvidal revealed he’s still a top fighter in 170lbs. Pettis (21-8) is 8-7 overall in the UFC and in his final fight was TKOed by Tony Ferguson in a 2018″Battle of the Year” contender. All Pettis’ previous bouts came at featherweight and lightweight so that this move to welterweight is interesting. Having said this, I really don’t believe I could pick Pettis here only based on all the damage he is accepted as of late and the reality Thompson is a natural welterweight. Start looking for Thompson to open as a favorite that is solid here.
