His address technique has been corrected by england captain Owen Farrell of falling foul of World Rugby’s crackdown in fear.
Farrell had been guilty of reckless no-arms battles against Australia and South Africa last autumn – though he escaped punishment for both – to raise worries over his manner of quitting enemies.
World Rugby are determined to rid the game of contact to the mind and also in May issued a directive clarifying the procedure for officiating tackles and shoulder charges, such as the use of cards.
While England head coach Eddie Jones is concerned that games danger being”destroyed” by a poor decision from officials, he has also seen the importance of optimizing Farrell’s approach.
“Owen is not too focused on that region, but he’s made some adjustments,” said defence coach John Mitchell.
“John Carrington, our strength and conditioning trainer, can be my support defence and he is very good at working on undertake technique. Some alterations have been made by them based on that [last fall ].
“There could be mitigating circumstances, however when your hands are in front of your shoulder you have got a better prospect of creating a proper wrap tackle.
“If your knee is forward of your hands, then the law doesn’t care for you very well.”
Mitchell insists over the officiating will perform in practice, each team will enter Japan 2019 having an awareness of uncertainty.
“It’s in the back of everybody’s mind and there’s some apprehension around it,” Mitchell added.
“You are just going to have to deal with whatever happens. There’ll certainly be some apprehension – is it actually going to be just like that?’ .
“You’d like to think that since then there was learning, a little bit more common sense and you do hear the phrases’mitigating circumstances’.”
England start their World Cup campaign against Tonga in Sapporo around September 22.
